Abstract

Factors and causes affecting non-compleance in epileptic patients at Amphur Puktongchai in Nakhonratchasima province A cross-sectional study by community survey of patients with epilepsy at Amphur Puktongchai in Nakhonratchasima Province between January and June 1998 reveals 87 cases of epilepsy. Most patients are female ( 59.8 percent ) and age range 20-49 year old ( 63.2 percent ). Seventy point on percent are cases of active epilepsy. Sixty three point two precent are classified as having high severity. Patient compliance in the 30 days and the 1-2 years prior to survey was found to be good in 65.5 percent and 50.6 percent of cases, respectively. There is no statistical significance between compliance and severity. Sociodemographic factors, including age, sex, education, income, distance from home to a community hospital, travelling fare, drinking behavior, inability to come alone, and duration of treatment, do not have an influence on patient compliance. Reasons for non-compliance quoted by patients are lack of knowledge about the disease of epilepsy ( 37.2 percent ), erroneous beliefs ( 16.2 percent ), and forgetfulness ( 13.9 percent ).
