Lead Levels in the Blood of Residents Living in the Vicinity of a Lead Smelter

Abstract
This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the lead levels in the blood of people living within 1 kilometer of a lead smelter. The subjects included were 134 residents aged 20 years and older, randomly selected, one each from the households. Among them, 103 (77%) were female, 12.7 per cent had occupational exposure to lead, 83.6 per cent spent their time at home seven days a week, 57.5 percent had a primary education, 54.5 percent lived within 500 meters of the smelter, and 71.6 per cent drank water from sealed containers. The average blood lead level was 12.7 micrograms/deciliter. Factors which were statistically and significantly associated with blood lead levels were education level, distance from the smelter and source of drinking water. The results of this study could be used to locate the hazardous zone surrounding the smelter, to select safer sources of drinking water and to educate residents at risk in order to prevent future health hazards
