Abstract
The Thai Society of Human Genetics (TSHG) is dedicated to advancing research
and innovation in human genetics. We strive to disseminate new discoveries in the field to
stakeholders, related organizations, and the public. To facilitate widespread knowledge
sharing and enhance public awareness of the national population genomics initiative,
Genomics Thailand (GeTH), the TSHG organized its third annual conference with support from
the Health Systems Research Institute (HSRI). The GeTH project, managed by HSRI through a
dedicated funding scheme, plays a pivotal role in preparing Thailand for the implementation
of genomic medicine. Recognizing the importance of promoting understanding of GeTH and
fostering new business opportunities, HSRI has been a key sponsor of the TSHG annual
conferences since their inception in 2020.
This year, 2024, marks a significant milestone for GeTH as it achieved 30,000
whole genome sequencing completions. The TSHG leveraged this achievement, along with
other recent discoveries, as a focal point for the third annual conference, themed "Harnessing
Genomics Thailand to Better Public Health: The Time is Now." The conference, held from
May 1-3, 2024, at the Pullman King Power Hotel, offered both in-person and online
participation. The conference program featured talks from renowned scientists in human
genetics, focusing on five key disease groups: rare diseases, cancer, non-communicable
diseases, pharmacogenomics, and infectious diseases. Additionally, sessions delved into
cross-cutting disciplines such as bioinformatics, business opportunities, and population
genetics. The presentations also addressed critical ethical, legal, and social implications (ELSI)
considerations relevant to human genetics research.
The conference fostered robust networking among participants and speakers,
both nationally and internationally. Updates on the progress of GeTH were also shared with
the audience. This platform effectively promoted knowledge dissemination and facilitated
collaboration, bringing us closer to realizing the potential of genomic medicine in Thailand.
