Abstract
This report summarizes the outcomes of a public engagement project aimed
at promoting awareness and understanding of genomics in Thailand. The project
sought to enhance knowledge, build confidence, and strengthen public awareness
among citizens, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and other stakeholders
regarding the importance of genomics technologies in improving national healthcare
and medical services. It also aimed to encourage policy and budgetary support, foster
research and innovation in biotechnology, and contribute to long-term economic
potential. In addition, the project produced accessible educational content and
public-facing activities disseminated through Thai PBS channels.
Key activities included expert talks and panel discussions on genomic medicine,
experience-sharing sessions by individuals who underwent genomic testing, and
The Art of Genome competition. Hands-on learning activities such as the Q&A Lab,
the Art of Genome exhibition, and the DNA Decode Boardgame further enhanced
public engagement. A total of 200 participants registered for the event, with 71%
residing in Bangkok. More than 97.5% of attendees agreed that genetic information is
important for personal health, and the most popular activities were the exhibition
booths and the art competition.
The project also implemented a communication strategy across television and
online platforms through three major Thai PBS programs: “Khon Su Rok”, “Wanmai
Variety” and “Setthakit Tit Ban”. These programs featured content on health literacy,
public health entitlements, data privacy related to genetic information, and the
economic implications of precision medicine. “Khon Su Rok” aired three genomicsrelated episodes with more than 3,400 views on YouTube and over 9,700 views on
Facebook.
“Wanmai Variety” presented four episodes covering health rights, genomic data
security, patient case studies, and event promotion, with viewership ranging from
several hundred to over 10,000 views. Meanwhile, “Setthakit Tit Ban” highlighted the
economic impact of genomics and the emerging opportunities in the health-tech
sector.
In summary, the project successfully expanded public awareness and
understanding of genomic medicine through on-site activities and Thai PBS public
media platforms. It generated significant knowledge outcomes, strong participant
engagement, and valuable data to support future communication strategies, policy
development, and investment in genomics in Thailand.
